Maybe you have heard a story where neighbors have discovered baby squirrels living in their attic. Maybe it is that you have heard some unusual noises and aren’t sure what to make of them. You are wondering if maybe you have squirrels in your attic, but aren’t really sure what to look for. This should help you to make that determination.
They Can Get In
Before you conclude that there is no way that squirrels could get into your house, think again. These are very wily animals, that requires just a small crack of space for them to get into your home. A mother squirrel expecting to deliver babies will find your attic to be the perfect location, meaning that it could be very likely that you have a squirrel in your attic. Don’t think that is impossible.
Scratching Sounds
There are clearly signals that will tell you if a squirrel is in your attic. This starts with scratching sounds that are related to the sounds that squirrels make when they're scurrying across wood or other similar surfaces. Even the baby squirrels, no matter if they are just a few days old are not, can still make a scratching noise.
Vocal Signs
There are also vocal signs that may tell you that a squirrel has had babies inside your attic area. These sounds are very much like a little squeaking or chirping sound that you would hear from any type of baby animal. Keep in mind that the average mother squirrel will have a litter between two and six squirrels, so the noise should be quite distinguishable.
If you are hearing some unusual sounds, it is time for you to be quiet for a little while. If you can get absolute quiet in your house, the sound should be unmistakable. You should clearly hear this, as quiet will draw them out.
Look for Them
If you believe that squirrels are likely in your attic, then your next step is to do a search of the attic area. You should see a spot near the corner where a nest has clearly been made. If you have memorabilia, such as newspaper articles, clothing, or pictures, you may see these items torn up, shredded and used to make a bed. The same could be true of your installation, which would make a perfect bed for the mother to use for her babies.
If you see this kind of nest, your next step is to either capture the animal’s yourself or to contact a professional to do the job for you. It may be safer and easier for you to hire someone to do the job. Even baby squirrels pose a health risk to you, as they can carry diseases and parasites as well, and hiring somebody to do the job for you helps to protect you from getting any potential pathogen. You want to protect these babies, and using a professional will help you to do so.
