What Diseases Are Bats Known to Carry?
Bats are already terrifying enough on their own simply by how they look, but you may not have been aware of the fact that these animals also carry a number of diseases. Your fear of them is not that they will turn into Dracula and suck out your blood, but is that they will scratch or bite you, releasing parasites, bacteria, or viruses into your body. There are 60 different diseases that bats are known to carry. Many of these are quite dangerous. Some are even lethal. In fact, bats carry more diseases that are dangerous to human beings than any other species of animals on earth outside of rodents. Here are some of the more common diseases that bats are known to carry.
Cyst-Causing Tapeworms
This is one of the more common parasites that bats carry. The troubling part of this tapeworm is that the bat doesn’t even need to bite or scratch you for you to receive it. If you step in its urine or feces or your skin comes in contact with particles of its feces, you could very well contract the parasite. This tapeworm makes its way to your intestinal tract where it feeds off the food you eat. It is extremely dangerous.
Avian Flu
While bats are not birds, they are still the carriers of avian flu. This disease passed in the same way that one would receive avian flu from a bird. This usually occurs from eating a bat that is infected with the virus.
Rabies
Bats are also the carriers of rabies. We most often associate this disease with dogs, but bats are actually far more likely to be carrying rabies than any canine. This is extremely dangerous in a bat, as you frequently are unaware that a bat is close to you until it is actually on top of you. If you suspect you have been infected by rabies from a bat, you need to seek medical attention right away. If not treated within 24 hours, this is usually a life-threatening illness.
Histoplasmosis
Histoplasmosis is another commonly carried disease by bats. This is an extremely dangerous disease, as it will cause the vital organs in your body to simply collapse. Like the cyst-causing tapeworms, you don’t have to come in contact with the bat to contract this illness. It is passed by coming in contact with a bat’s feces, also known as guano. The parasites become airborne as the feces dries, making it easy for you to breathe in or have the parasites attached to your skin. This is why when you are in an area where bats are known to live, you need to make sure that you are extremely careful.
Disease Generalizations
Most illnesses that bats carry affect either your respiratory or digestive systems. Because these are two of the most important systems within your body, contracting any of these illnesses can be life-threatening. If you have any concern about contracting a virus, parasite, or bacteria from a bat, you need to seek medical attention immediately. A delay could make treatment impossible.
